Skin & Ear Infections
Skin infections are common in pets. Generally, they are caused by an overproduction of normal skin bacteria. It occurs when your pet’s immune system has additional issues like underlying disease or allergies. Signs include:
- Small red bumps/pustules
- Scaly red patches
- Moist areas of inflamed skin
Skin infections can happen when bacteria not part of your pet’s typical skin environment enter through a puncture or a small scrape. They are usually treated with medicated shampoos or oral antibiotics.
Ear infections are common in floppy-eared dogs and can occur in the inner, middle and outer ears. Infections result from the spreading of infection from your pet’s external ear.
Signs of an ear infection include:
- Scratching the affected ear
- Dark discharge
- Head shaking
- Odour
- Ear canal swelling and redness
- Itchiness

- Scabs and crusting in the ears
When you visit our clinic, your veterinary dermatologist will diagnose the issue and come up with a treatment plan. Treatment may involve cleaning the ears, ear drops, anti-inflammatory medication and/or oral antibiotics.
Ear & Nose Disorders
Several types of ear and nose disorders in animals, such as rhinitis and sinusitis, can occur. Rhinitis is a common upper respiratory tract issue that causes inflammation of the nose’s mucous membranes. It is associated with sinusitis, which is an inflammation of the sinus lining.
The cause is primarily viral infections but can also be chronic inflammatory disease, parasites, trauma tumours, foreign bodies, or fungal infections. Treatment may involve antifungal therapies or additional medical care.
Paw & Nail Disorders
There are several causes of paw and nail disorders, some minor ones like brittle nails or calluses and some nail bed disorders. Additionally, the paw may have lacerations, punctures, bacterial infections, burns, frostbite, and more.
If you suspect nail and paw disorders, contact your veterinary dermatologist as soon as possible. Some issues, like frostbite, can cause skin death as your pet walks. Likewise, punctures can quickly lead to infection.
Treatment depends on identifying the underlying source of your pet’s discomfort.
Allergy Skin Testing & Treatment
The best method for allergy testing (environmental allergies) is intradermal. Your veterinary dermatologist will administer a sedative to your pet to relax them. They shave an area on your pet’s side and inject several allergens into your pet’s skin. After 20 minutes, they examined the site to see which allergen generated a raised, red reaction.
Treatment can involve limiting exposure/avoiding triggers, medication, or changing diet.
